Each of our locations has a nurse to assist with medication management, personal care needs, and nutritional monitoring. All staff are trained to assist with personal care, showers, and one person transfers. Exercise is offered daily in many forms and tailored to meet the needs of each person’s individual strengths. In collaboration with the Mesa Arts Center, the creative arts engagement program seeks to open the doors of creativity and expression for members at OCC. With involvement from artists and the Mesa Arts Center, members are encouraged to reflect on their life stories through art, movement, and dance. The Creative Arts Engagement program seeks to enhance self esteem, morale, and overall health.

Many activities are designed to bring together the members of Oakwood with children of all ages. Not only does it strengthen the community but it also enhances communication, stimulates learning, and increases emotional support for members. Furry friends are often found wandering around looking for a little love!

The woodworking group is geared to connect members to projects they may enjoy doing with any level of physical assistance. Woodworking is great for those who used to enjoy it or those who are looking to learn something new. Previous projects include a refurbished desk, a wheelchair ramp, and a benches made from pallets.
It always does the soul good to get your hands dirty and spend time outdoors. Our members are able to recreate a memory of something that was once loved and feel an accomplishment, purpose, and overall feelings of content.

Music has a way of bringing emotion and memories back to the person. It isn’t unheard of to see someone who has lost their ability to speak recall a favorite song and sing along with the tune.

CREATIVE ARTS ENGAGEMENT
Cognitive Engagement is an innovative program that utilizes history, conversation, and photography to expand conversations, promote critical thinking, and increase memory retention. Members also increase their social skills and the ability to express their thoughts. Research shows that those with Alzheimer’s disease, traumatic brain injuries, and other situations can actually
improve speech and memory. Oakwood Creative Care proudly utilizes the Alle Learning Program.
Whether it’s going to a baseball game, grabbing a bite to eat, catching a movie, fishing, or strolling through a museum, Oakwood is a firm believer in being part of the community and allowing the community to be part of us. Members enjoy making tutus, quilts, and other treasures for foster children at Helen’s Hope Chest.
Members can be found at Feed My Starving Children or sending packages to soldiers overseas.
