There’s something truly enchanting about a snow globe. With a gentle shake, the world inside comes alive—flakes swirl, dreams sparkle, and for a few moments, time seems to slow down. These tiny treasures have captured hearts for generations, each one holding its own little universe of wonder. Today, Oakwood Creative Care invites caregivers and loved ones living with dementia to pause and create a moment of connection and imagination by swirling back in time to the story behind the snow globe.
A Little History: Where Did the Snow Globe Begin?
The snow globe’s origin story begins over a century ago in Vienna, Austria with a man named Erwin Perzy. Perzy ran a medical instrument supply business and had been tasked by a local surgeon to improve upon Thomas Edison’s then-new lightbulb, which the surgeon wanted made brighter for his operating room, according to Artsy.
Working with a water-filled glass globe, Perzy accidentally discovered the whimsical effect of “falling snow” when he placed semolina flakes, tiny particles often found in baby food, inside the glass dome.
Charmed by his own creation, however accidental it may have been, Perzy created the very first snow globe—featuring a tiny model of a church surrounded by gentle snow. His happy discovery soon turned into a beloved art form, spreading joy across Europe and eventually around the world. Snow globes have since become souvenirs, keepsakes, and seasonal symbols of cherished memories captured in glass.
The Meaning Behind the Magic
Today, snow globes represent more than just winter scenes. They remind us of nostalgia, imagination, and hope—a way to hold a moment still and see beauty from every angle. Each swirl tells a story: maybe it’s a childhood memory of snow days, a favorite holiday tradition, or simply the feeling of wonder we all carry inside.
And for those living with memory loss, these stories matter deeply. Familiar images, music, and even the act of reminiscing can unlock joyful memories, helping reconnect past and present through the heart’s most powerful pathways.
Reflect & Remember: Conversations to Keep the Snow Swirling
As you and your loved one admire a snow globe—or any cherished keepsake—take a moment to share stories and reflections together. Here are a few gentle questions to spark conversation and connection:
-
What memories come to mind when you see the snow swirling?
-
If you could design your own snow globe, what scene would you put inside?
-
What’s one dream or hope you’d like to bring to life this year?
Every question opens a window into memory, creativity, and meaning… the very proof that even the smallest swirl can awaken the biggest smiles.
The Power of Learning & Discovery for Adults with Memory Loss
Exploring something new can be a wonderful way to stimulate memory and enhance quality of life.
When we learn, we’re not just absorbing facts; we’re sparking curiosity, engaging the senses, and forming new connections in the brain.
For older adults with memory changes, learning or rediscovering the story behind familiar objects can help activate long-term memory, inspire conversation, and promote feelings of purpose and delight.
Whether it’s uncovering where snow globes were invented, studying their craftsmanship, or even creating one by hand, these experiences offer a sense of wonder that supports emotional well-being.
At Oakwood Creative Care, moments like these are part of what we call “creative aging,” using imagination, art, and curiosity to bring joy, engagement, and connection to every day.
